This year was definitely one that forced prioritizing self care on us all. There was really no way to get through these last (almost) 10 months without some kind of recuperating.
Not only was it a stressful one, it was also very isolating. That isolation allowed a lot of us to really focus on how we were feeling but mostly gave us the time to do so.
If you read my post 5 Gentle Ways To Beat Stagnancy During Hard Times, you would have had some insight on what the year was like for me.
I was definitely forced to put my health above all and ensure that I was treating myself with care on all levels.
This year was one of the first times I was able to apply all my self care tools to better treat myself.
And thanks to Amazon, I was able to get some of those things from the comfort of my bed when I couldn’t leave the house.
Here are 10 items that helped me get through this year and how I used them in my self care practice:
1. A Massage For Self Care
As a massage therapist I know the importance of receiving a massage, not just for self care maintenance but also to help with managing stress and moving lymph.
Some benefits of massage include:
- Relieves stress
- Reduce anxiety
- Manages pain
- Reduce muscle tension
- Relieves headaches
- Improves circulation
- Eliminates toxins
Unfortunately due to the pandemic, going out and getting a real hands on massage was out of the question for me. So I decided to do some research on massage guns and found the perfect one.
Firstly, this massage gun is POWERFUL. Which is absolutely amazing for me since I love deeper pressure.
I used this gun mostly on my feet, legs, lower back, shoulders and abdomen.
I always start at my feet and work up to assist circulation.
One of my favorite features is that It comes with multiple attachments allowing the ability to work broadly and also more specific, like targeting trigger points.
This massage gun was clearly not as great as real human hands, however it helped me target lots of tension and move lymph around.
2. Aromatherapy For Self Care
A diffuser is just one of the many ways to use essential oils. Not only do you get to experience the aromatherapy from the oils, you also get some moisture in the air similar to a humidifier, just on a smaller scale.
When using essential oils you want to ensure they are 100% therapeutic grade. Since you will be inhaling the oils you want to be sure you’re getting the purest quality to experience full benefits.
Some of my favorite oils are:
- Clary sage
- Lemon grass
- DoTTERA’s Breathe
- DoTTERA’s Serenity
I do not sell doTTERA but I do love their blends. However they are a bit pricey.
Here’s a more budget friendly brand that I love:
The diffuser I use was a gift but there are a ton of options on Amazon.
Here’s the one I’m eyeing for my living room:
Aside from the aromatherapy benefits of the oils, I love that a diffuser doubles as a non-toxic air freshener.
3. A Good Quality Water bottle
Yes, a water bottle is a self-care item. Mine is at least. I absolutely love my water bottle, I carry it everywhere. It holds 64oz of water so I don’t have to worry about running low when I’m out.
I also carry it around the house so I have no excuses but to stay hydrated.
Buying a good quality water bottle is how I maintained my hydration habits. Knowing I spent a few extra dollars on one made me feel like I had to use it.
Here’s the one I have.
It keeps water nice and cold all day, which is perfect for summer outings. It is a bit big so I got a strap for it and carry it around like a purse
I suggest staying away from plastic and aluminum to avoid exposure to the toxins.
4. A Cozy Self Care Sweater
As a Taurus moon, comfort is a huge part of feeling well. And with fall creeping up, a cozy sweater is a must. I have my favorite rust colored fuzzy cardigan that I wear at home for extra comfort.
It’s both a security blanket and a source of warmth.
I usually love thrifting oversized grandpa sweaters but I plan on adding one of these to my fall 2020 wardrobe.
5. Herbal Tinctures/Supplements
I was raised in a home of remedies , herbal teas and supplements. So I’ve always used herbs for ailments and prevention.
Whether it be tea to help me get to sleep or supplements to help recover from a cold much faster.
As I mentioned in one of my previous post I had some health issues this year, so I really piled on a huge collection of supplements. Some that helped others that didn’t.
Here are 5 supplements that I would not be able to get by with:
1. Host Defense, MyCommunity Extract, Advanced Immune Support, Mushroom Supplement with Lion’s Mane, Reishi, Vegan, Organic, 2 oz (60 Servings)
I’ve been using medicinal mushrooms for quite some time now. They have so many great benefits, I think I’ll write a future post about them.
This blend is great for immune support.
2. Turmeric Curcumin with BioPerine 1500mg. Highest Potency Available. Premium Joint & Healthy Inflammatory Support with 95% Standardized Curcuminoids. Non-GMO, Gluten Free Capsules with Black Pepper
Turmeric is life. I absolutely love this root. I grow it in my garden and I use it in every way I can. My favorite way to have it is making turmeric lemonade.
I decided to take a supplement daily to assist in maintaining an anti-inflammatory environment.
I‘ve used a few different turmeric supplements and this one was by far the most potent one!
3. Mullein Liquid Extract 4 fl oz | All-Natural Dietary Supplement | Anti-Inflammatory | Antioxidant | Respiratory Health | Immune Support | Sleep Aid | Non-GMO
Mullein is great for lung health, but also known to be anti-inflammatory.
4. Zazzee USDA Organic Spirulina Powder 2.2 Pounds (1 KG), 303 Servings, 100% Pure and Non-Irradiated, Vegan, All-Natural, and Non-GMO, Mess-Free Wide Mouth Container, Fresh Smell and Neutral Taste
Another one that I’ve used for quite some time for it antioxidants. This time around I made sure to keep this a part for my daily regimen to assist with, inflammation, and heavy metal detoxification.
5. NOW Foods Supplements, L-Lysine (L-Lysine Hydrochloride) 1,000 mg, Double Strength, Amino Acid, 100 Tablets
This one was a new one for me, but definitely helpful. L-lysine is an amino acid which is great for helping the body absorb iron, zinc and calcium.
6. Epsom Salt Self Care Soak
I’ve mentioned Epsom salt baths in a previous post and I cannot stress it enough. I try to soak for 30 minutes once a week and sometimes more often when I’m not feeling too well.
The benefits include:
- Helps flush out toxins and heavy metals
- Provides a better way to absorb magnesium
- Promotes stress reduction and better sleep
- Eases joint and muscle aches
This is my favorite Epsom salt to use.
I love to add essential oils and some dried herbs to enhance the benefits.
Personally, I think Epsom salt baths are one of the best And easiest self-care practices to do regularly.
Grab a good book and unwind!
7. A Bath Pillow
If you don’t have a bath pillow you need to stop everything and order the one below right now. I got a bath pillow a few years ago because I was tired of that awkward slouch in the tub when I was trying to relax.
It was a huge game changer. The one I have is very simple and under $10.
But this is the one I plan to treat myself with when I can because it’s time for an upgrade.
8. A Tongue Scraper
A huge part of my self care/ healing process involves healing my gut microbiome. What a lot of people aren’t aware of is how our oral microbiome greatly affects our gut. The environment of your mouth is a vital step to healing the gut.
So on top of brushing more regularly, drinking teas that support oral health and flossing, I added tongue scraping.
Here’s the one I got.
I love that it comes with 3 so you’re pretty much set for a while.
They even sent me another free set for leaving a review!
Here are a few benefits of tongue scraping:
- Removes bacteria, toxins and dead cells from tongue
- Freshens breath
- Improves sense of taste
9. CBD Oil – A Must For Self Care
I’ve used CBD oil after my last pregnancy to help keep my hormones balanced after giving birth. It helped keep me calm and relaxed during what can be a crazy time during motherhood.
I hadn’t really felt the need to use it until this summer when I was trying to target some inflammatory type response my body was having. On top of the above listed supplements, adding CBD oil really changed the game for me.
It’s the perfect self care product as it both promotes relaxation and assist in other health benefits like:
- Pain relief
- Reduce anxiety and depression
- Promote heart health
- Anti-Inflammatory & neuroprotective properties
After much research I found NuLeaf Naturals.
They are highly recommended for people who have autoimmune type issues, the reviews were amazing and the quality of their CBD was better than most out there.
What I like about this CBD oil is that it’s super potent so you don’t need much, and that’s because it is full spectrum.
It’s also made with organic hemp, which is grown, watered, and harvested in the most extra way possible. This company really cares about their process and you can tell by the way this product works.
They also sell CBD for pets!
P.S. They ship fast! I received mine 3 days after I ordered.
10. Ear Seeds
Ear seeds were something I came across from my acupuncturist. They are essentially small herbal seeds that stimulate a pressure point. It’s basically acupressure for your ear. They are based on the same idea as acupuncture, where the movement of your Chi determines your health.
My acupuncturist applied these on specific points along my ear and massaged them for a few seconds and I felt instantly relaxed.
You can buy a pack and look up a map online and apply them yourself too!
This kit I got came with a map and a free e-book that goes into Auricular Therapy (Ear acupuncture) .
Ear seeds are pretty easy to use, however I do suggest seeing an acupuncturist for a treatment as the full body effect really makes a difference in the overall flow of Chi.
Self-care has been a buzz word for the last few years, however it is one trend that will hopefully never die off. This needs to be a permanent part of our everyday lives. We’ve lived too long ignoring our overall health.
It is time we start prioritizing self-care and normalize treating ourselves to what was once seen as luxury.
Wellness should not be a luxury. It should be available to all.
I hope you give at least one of these suggestions a try. They really helped me out and I plan to use them into the new year!
Leave a comment if you already own any of the above. How do you use it? Is there something on this list that you think I should try? Let me know.
